Death And Ageing

The Tibetans have a book called, 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead" and while it sounds morbid to an outsider it actually shows the rest of the world a glimpse into a culture that is at peace with and has accepted death as an important part of the human condition. Meanwhile, everywhere else around the world there is a great race and battle against ageing.

Society seems to be obsessed with all the latest anti-ageing treatments, lifestyles and products that pop out every so often on the market. When in the past, anti-ageing products were produced mainly for people into their fifties, now there are anti-ageing products for women as early as 30.

This anti-ageing obsession can be attributed to the fact that, we are all terrified at the thought of dying. This is why we constantly deny the fact that we are getting old and getting closer to death through cosmetic products and services.

We are constantly searching for the elusive fountain of youth that will keep us young forever. However, the actualization of this phenomenon could actually be catastrophic. Imagine if every individual lived forever and stayed young eternally. That would have catastrophic effects on human evolution and the home we call earth.

While there is nothing wrong with wanting to look attractive and youthful, a line must be drawn between healthy vanity and an unhealthy obsession. Our lives shouldn't have to be lived as a constant tug of war in an anti-ageing battle.

Instead of focusing on the inevitable we need to learn to live our lives to the fullest all the time because if we continue on this anti-ageing obsession then before we know it, our life has come close to its end and all we've really accomplished was to deny the fact that growing old is a natural aspect of human life.

The truth is, we need not fear growing old if we live our life wisely. This is akin to good time management. If we don't spend our present regretting the past or worrying about the future, we can actually have more time to spend on important things like actually living.

The Tibetans because of their culture are very much at peace and have accepted death as an integral part of living. In fact, the key they say to living is to understand and accept he inevitability of death. In this awareness they are able to give proper importance to every moment, living it like it were their last.
